The container transport logistics sector is experiencing rising cost pressures and stagnant productivity enhancements, while also facing longer-term sustainability and energy transition challenges.

Container transport costs are rising at nearly six-times the rate of general inflation, driven by:

  • Significant hikes in third-party charges outside of the direct control of transport operators
  • New and increasing toll charges in some jurisdictions, with exposure to multiple tolling cost for one container through its supply chain journey
  • Rising costs of compliance, maintenance and safety controls
  • Rising labour cost and reduced labour & skills availability
  • Fuel cost and fuel excise increases

Many of the challenges faced by the sector are systemic rather than cyclical:

  • Landside infrastructure and systems’ bottlenecks, leading to congestion, delays, poor information visibility, and a reduction in productivity levels
  • Productivity gains not keeping pace with rising costs
  • A dilemma in how to transition towards a more sustainable future when there is uncertainty in making investments while maintaining marketplace competitiveness
